2/11 Player Evaluations

Dear Western Hills Little League Families,

Given the weather event, power outages, and road blockages, WHLL is postponing player evaluations one week to Saturday, Feb. 11 with a make-up day on Sunday, Feb. 12.

We realize the weather will probably be beautiful by late Saturday and Sunday.  However, the capitol improvement efforts at Hatley Fields and 1st Street were halted due to the weather and the outfields will be too soggy. Most importantly, too many of our WHLL families are struggling at this point with power outages and an inability to traverse the roads.  We feel strongly this is the right decision at this point.

All other times/processes about player evaluations remain the same.  See below for details.

Lastly, if you can volunteer to help at player evaluations on Saturday or Sunday, please email your name, phone, and availability to info@whll.org

Thank you for your patience and please stay safe.

Make-Up
(Sunday at 11:30 am)

If you cannot attend Saturday, please notify your commissioner (see below), and make plans to attend Sunday at the same locations as above.

Arrive on Sunday between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm.  We will wrap up by 1:30 pm so everyone (including coaches and volunteers) can enjoy the Superbowl.

FORMAT
*Please share this information with your child to help them mentally prepare for the process.
All divisions use the same process.
Players will be evaluated individually.
Check in upon arrival. Wait. Warm up.

Skill to be evaluated:
•Hitting, Running, Fielding, Throwing, Catching Pop Flies (and optional
pitching evaluation in Minors and Majors).
•When your child is called, he or she will be put through a very rapid set of skills described as
follows:
•Hit 4-5 pitched baseballs;
•Run hard from Home plate to 1B to 2B on the final hit;
•Pick up a glove at 2B, move to the Shortstop position and field 3 ground balls and throw to 1B;
•Run to the outfield and catch three pop-flies; and
•Run to the bullpen and pitch (optional).
Done. Go home. The entire "tryout" should take 4-5 minutes. *With wait time, it should take ~30 minutes of your time.
Pro Tip:
Warm up at home. When you arrive, play some catch with your child if necessary or have them play catch with another child. Also, have them watch a few players go through the process to get mentally prepared.

WHAT TO BRING & WEAR:
Wear athletic clothes and dress for the weather.
Wear cleats.
Bring bat, helmet, glove, and ball (the ball is to warm up).
Water.
If your child wears batting gloves, sunglasses, etc., then bring those - but that is optional.

Answer: The evaluations are used by the coaches to draft teams. They are a critical part of the WHLL process.

Question: How long will this take?

Question: Should we prepare/practice/warm up?
Answer: That’s a good idea.

Question: What happens after evaluations? When will I hear something from the league?
Answer: It takes about 7-10 days for the league to get fully organized after the evaluations.

Question: My child plays in the younger divisions (tee-ball/coach pitch/machine pitch 7). When is our evaluation?
